The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce its exciting Young People’s Concerts for 2009! Last March, 7,000 children experienced the magic of live classical music performances that were both, educational and entertaining—communicating age-appropriate concepts about music in an up-tempo, highly interactive presentation. These concerts are carefully designed to introduce your students to a stimulating and educational music experience with the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra!
This year’s series will be held on March 2, 3, 4, 2009 at 9:30 am and 12 noon. The concerts remain FREE, however space is limited. All performances are held at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in historic New Bedford and last approximately 45 minutes.
These concerts consist of interactive programs, which focus upon the needs of your school and community while encompassing musical themes that reinforce the national and local standards of music education.
These concerts address the MA State Learning Strand 5 in the Arts Disciplines: Music. “Students will describe and analyze…the music of others using appropriate music vocabulary.” In particular, Standards 5.2, 5.4, 5.6, 5.9, and 5.11 will be addressed in the formal performance setting of the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center.
This year’s theme is: You’ve Got A Lot of Style! A Quick Trip Through 4 Centuries of Musical Style
A comprehensive Listening & Learning Guide will be available to each teacher which contains detailed background information on each composer and piece, plus many lesson plans designed to help prepare students for the concerts and to make essential connections across the curriculum in the classroom. It will be available in January. The NBSO believes educating young people is a central part of its mission. In 1989, the NBSO implemented a youth program designed to introduce public and private elementary school students to classical music. Nearly 7,000 children attend the Young People’s Concerts each year, which are held at the historic Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in downtown New Bedford.
Music Director Dr. David MacKenzie, a lifelong educator, has developed specific age-appropriate programs for students in grades 2 through 6. The Young People’s Concerts are often students’ first experience in a theatre, as well as their first exposure to classical music. These programs were developed by Maestro MacKenzie with advice and support from Janet Whitla, president and CEO of Education Development Center, Inc., and Sandria Parsons of the SouthCoast Learning Network, both professional educators and NBSO board members.
In 1998, YPC reached students from 19 schools. In 2001, 30 schools sent students to YPC. The program now serves more than 125 schools in Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable, and Dukes counties. Due to a generous anonymous gift, the NBSO offered a third day of YPC in March 2006, (2 more performances), bringing nearly 6,000 students to the Zeiterion. Nearly 4,900 students attended YPC in March of 2007. This past March 2008, due to additional funding, the NBSO was once again able to offer a third day of YPC (2 additional performances) reaching almost 7,000 students and teachers.
During the 05-06 school year, we introduced a new initiative, Music in the Mornings, which exposes young students to classical music each school-day morning. A brief introduction is read over the intercom system by the principal, and then a short musical example is played. A different composer is featured each week. This five-year program is being used in more than 2,000 schools across the country. The NBSO was proud to introduce it in New England for the first time.
Music in the Mornings was introduced by conductor and educator David MacKenzie. We have already initiated this program in 30 public and private schools in New Bedford, Fairhaven, Dartmouth, Acushnet, Fall River, Marion, Mattapoisett, and Carver.
Beginning August 1, 2006, we worked to raise the $45,000 necessary to place this important program in 15 more schools this school year and with your help, we succeeded! Currently, over 12,000 children participate in the Music in the Mornings Program every day.
If you have a school you wish to sponsor, or help sponsor, or you know someone that is committed to bringing the life-changing power of great music into our schools and may want to become involved in this effort, please contact:
