Letter from the Maestro,
Dr. David MacKenzie

Ghindin

Welcome to our 2008-2009 Season! I have never been as excited about the future for this orchestra as I am at this moment. I have said many times that I think the NBSO is one of the best-kept secrets on the South Coast, meaning that I believe few people in this community really understand how privileged we are to have such an amazingly talented group of musicians from across the region sharing their artistry with us week after week, bringing performances of the highest artistic caliber to our stage. We hope you will join us for this Season, and help spread the word... help us make the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra one of the best told secrets on the South Coast!

About Dr. MacKenzie:
In addition to his duties with the NBSO, Dr. David MacKenzie is resident Conductor of Rogue Opera
in Oregon and Music Director of Mastersingers by the Sea on Cape Cod, and is much in demand as a guest conductor with orchestras in the United States and South America. His more than 30 years of experience as a conductor spans the gamut of orchestral and choral music, opera and musical theater, and ballet.

He was the founding Music Director of the Sandy Springs Chamber Orchestra in Atlanta and has held conducting positions with orchestras in Colombia, South America, in Kentucky and Colorado. Of his work with the Sandy Springs Chamber Orchestra, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said: “In just one year, David MacKenzie has built the Sandy Springs Chamber Orchestra into one of the treasures of Atlanta’s musical life.”

Dr. MacKenzie completed graduate studies at the Yale University School of Music, where he received the Doctor of Musical Arts, Master of Musical Arts, and Master of Music. He received the Bachelor of Music from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

About the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1915, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra (NBSO) is one of the oldest regional orchestras in the United States. Led by Dr. David MacKenzie, whose 30-year career spans the worlds of symphonic music, opera and musical theater, the NBSO is a fully professional orchestra performing the full range of the world’s great classical and new music repertoire.

In addition to its subscription series and Pops concerts, the NBSO is also a community leader in arts education. The NBSO's Music in the Mornings program reaches more than 12,000 elementary school students, in 34 schools every day. The Orchestra's Young People's concerts brings free live performances to nearly 7,000 students every March, and the Orchestra's master class series gives aspiring young musicians the chance to study with the NBSO's distinguished guest soloists.
